4 days/ 3 nights Fes to Merzouga Desert itinerary
Day 1 : Fez – Toudra Gorges
Leaving Fez in the morning, passing cedar forests of Azrou where the wild monkeys are located. It will be good opportunity to take photos of wilderness in Morocco. Lunch in a small Berber village of Zaida. We continue the way through the Atlas Mountains enjoying the landscapes of Medilt to arrive to the small town of Rich. Here ,we turn right to pass through the famous town of Imilchil before arriving to Toudra Gorges where we’ll spend the night in a hotel.
Day 2 : Toudra Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, we say good bye to Toudra gorges on the way to the Sahara desert of Merzouga/Erg Chebbi. Berber villages are scattered along the way. We’ll pass through Tinjdad, Jorf and Erfoud in which we’ll feel the beginning of the Saharan oasis of Tafilalet. Lunch in Rissani, and then continue to Merzouga, where we’ll find our camels waiting for us for the camel trekking in the dunes of erg Chebbi, which are considered as the highest ones in North Africa. It is a great experience to imagine yourself riding a camel in erg chebbi where the silence of the desert is the dominant. Dinner is served under a Berber tent if it is cold and in an open air if it is hot. Your camel man will do his best to make you enjoy your camel trekking with a fire and Berber drums.
Day 3 : Merzouga – Camel Trekking-Erg Chebbi Merzouga
After breakfast, you will go all the way round the dunes via the oasis of merzouga, the nomadic depository, khamlia village Blacks’ village. You’ll visit the Gnawa people, originally slaves brought from Sudan, to experience their music and lifestyle. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its bird populations, you’ll leave for Rissani. Once called Sijilmassa, this was the meeting place for the salt caravans, coming from Timbuktu in Mali. Here you’ll walk through the souk, selling spices, vegetables and cloths. After a lunch pizza in Rissani you will travel back to your hotel where we’ll spend the night in a hotel. “Auberge le petit prince”.
Day 4 : Merzouga-Fes
After breakfast We’ll start the trip back to Fez. We’ll take the national route 13 passing through Ziz Valley in Errachidia. We change the route in Zaida to go through Boulmane to arrive in Fez.
